Norm Veliquette on the cherry business

"There is great variability in year-to-year production of cherries, far far more than in most food crops, mostly attributable to our far-north location as a fruit growing area. The cherry industry, growers and processors, have agreed (not unanimously, but by major majority) on a plan to deal with this variability." Complete article

Green Elk Rapids has just started discussions with cherry growers/ processors and area food pantries to see if, in the future, dumped cherries might be sent to food pantries instead of left to rot.

Green E.R. Day is coming

Green Elk Rapids Day is scheduled for Monday, May 18. Booths and exhibits are on display from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Village Council meeting that night starts at 6 p.m. instead of 7, devoting the entire meeting to presentations about and overviews of several conservation and green programs and also detailing the many recycling and conservation efforts by the village.

There are no entrance or exhibition fees. Interested individuals may still inquire regarding any display items, recycled artwork and so forth. Please contact Royce Ragland for more information.

FIT for Michigan

Interest is high here in Michigan to create a feed-in-tariff (FIT) system to promote an increase in renewable energy sources. If the state legislature adopts FIT, anyone (business, school, homeowner, etc.) would be to contract with a local energy utility to sell the electricity produced by an alternative energy source at an attractive price – for as long as 20 years. This bill would create thousands of energy entrepreneurs in Michigan.  More info on feed-in-tariffs

Governor Granholm has spoken favorably about this program. Video clip
